ABSTRACT

Anxiety and depression in infants are a problem that is increasing, this being a consequence of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. The current panorama indicates that infants are possible victims of suffering from these moods at very early ages and in the worst case, it becomes the leading cause of child suicide. For this reason, it is very important to seek resources and means to mitigate the situation. The current project consisted of making a web application for the control of emotions in primary school children through modules made up of theoretical sessions that cover the management of emotions, thoughts, assertiveness, frustration, breathing, and muscle relaxation. Each module in turn has an intervention session, which consists of situations that are presented to the infants with the aim of analyzing the psychological impact that the theoretical sessions had, with the main purpose of improving or intervening the control of their emotions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

This paper reports on a comparative study between the structures, regulation and challenges of small and medium size businesses (SMEs) in Australia and two Latin American jurisdictions – Chile and Cuba - with the object of exploring ways in which SME-propitious ecosystem can be configured in an unprecedented crisis situation. It examines the legislation, bodies and regulation in place which deal with SME issues, including consumer protection, and the differing contextual considerations, taking cognizance of the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the paper explores ways in which SMEs can be assisted and advised of their legal rights, including the provision of clinical and advisory support at a university level, and considers the steps taken by governments in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. To compare practices and learn from them the research utilizes three case studies and contrasts the issues faced in an emerging economy such as Cuba with more established frameworks such as Chile and Australia, both OECD countries. © 2022, Juridicas. ABSTRACT

Aggressive conflicts are part of the natural social behavior of students in schools, which can lead to bullying when there is a form of discrimination or abuse of power, either because of their characteristics or their way of life (sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, immigration status, ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status, health, disability, religious beliefs, pregnancy, among others). In the face-to-face mode, the aggressors could be identified and in some way the conflicts were mediated by teachers or authorities of the institution. However, since education changed to a virtual modality caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, new forms of aggressive behavior have emerged with cyberbullying. In this new scenario teachers, parents and law enforcement should take an active role in raising awareness about bullying and cyberbullying. The main objective of this paper is to describe a proposal based on gamification strategy to prevent and raise awareness of aggressive behaviors among students in a virtual environment. The study focuses on three objectives: a) to study the use of visual methods based on microlearning and the techniques to engage students;b) to identify game scenarios and strategies to design an interactive Escape Room;and c) to evaluate the design and content with three experts in psychology. The results indicate that the Escape Room is a different alternative to understand the problems derived from Bullying and cyberbullying. In the future, we are planning to carry out an intervention with students from Ecuador and Colombia to evaluate the impact. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The educational level of technical high schools has been affected by the current state of emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the lack of educational resources for subjects that require laboratory practice. The objective of the research is to describe a pedagogical strategy using interactive support material focused on augmented reality for equipment installations and electrical machines learning, in order to supply the lack of laboratories. The research carried out surveys to seven teachers, who teach practical subjects, and evaluations to 60 students who underwent the intervention with the application of augmented reality. The results of the pre-test and post-test were analyzed to verify the stated objectives, demonstrating that there are motivating results with the application of two tools Mywebar and Assemblr in the performance of the classes, affirming that the augmented reality tool impacts and motivates the teaching-learning process in the technical area in the professional figure of installations, equipment and electrical machines in a favorable way. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities around the world implemented measures to reduce peoples’ mobility and to therefore reduce infections. Not all economic activities could take place remotely, however. In Mexico, the pandemic situation significantly affected fishing, despite its being declared an “essential” activity: reduced production and lower prices resulted from the inability to fish during confinement and the slowdown of international trade. This investigation focuses on the Mexican state of Yucatan, due to its being the largest producer of octopus and grouper and the third largest producer of lobster in the country (species of medium–high and high economic value and demand throughout the international marketplace). After the corresponding bibliographic review, the compilation of testimonies (between 2020 and 2021) and the analysis of information, the results reveal different strategies carried out by the coastal fishermen of Yucatan to face the adverse conditions created by the global health emergency and they demonstrate the important role of individual, family, and community resilience in the contexts of marginalisation. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Background and objective: The care of tracheostomized patients are high risk skills and low incidence. Strategies for improvement of health care in hospital wards and specialties other than otolaryngology based solely on training have not been able to offer an adequate solution. A tracheostomized patient unit is presented directed by the otolaryngology service to attend all tracheostomized hospitalized patients of all specialties. Material and methods: Background: Third level public hospital with 876 hospitalization beds and 30 ICU beds for 481,296 inhabitants. Unit model: Transversal unit for the hospital providing attention to all tracheostomized patients, adults, and children, of all specialties, with dedication of 50% of a ENT nurse of hospitalization that moves to the hospitalization bed of the specialty of each patient and 50% of another office ENT nurse for ambulatory patients care, with the consultancy of an ENT specialist and coordinated by the ENT supervisor. Results: 572 patients between 2016 and 2021, 80% men, aged 63 ± 14 years, were attended in the unit. 14.7 ± 2 tracheostomized patients daily and 96 ± 4 complication annual consultations were attended, rising up to 19 tracheostomized patients daily by 2020 and 141 ± 8.4 consultations by complications in 2020 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mean stay of the non-ENT specialties was reduced in 13 days, increasing the satisfaction of the ENT and non-ENT professionals and the satisfaction of the users. Conclusions: A Tracheostomized Patient Care Unit proactively directed from the Otorhinolaryngology Service to transversally care for all tracheostomized patients improves the quality of health care by reducing stay, complications, and emergencies. Improves the satisfaction of non-otolaryngological professionals by reducing the anxiety of facing care of patients who lack knowledge and experience and that of ENT specialists and nurses by reducing unplanned extemporaneous demands for care. Improves user satisfaction by perceiving adequate continuity of care. The Otorhinolaryngology Services provide their experience in the management of laryngectomized and tracheostomized patients and in teamwork with other specialists and professionals without the need to create new structures outside otorhinolaryngology.

ABSTRACT

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the physical activity and psychological health of university students. Objective: To analyze the physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic and its association with subjective well-being and mental health in university students in Chile. Method: Cross-sectional study in a sample of 469 students from different Chilean universities (67.4% women, M = 21.7 SD = 2.45 years). The physical activity, subjective well-being and mental health was measured. Results: Students who maintained a physically active behavior before and during the pandemic presented higher subjective well-being (men: P = 0.020;and women p <0.0001) than those who were physically inactive before and during the pandemic (women M = 4, 84, SD = 1.64;men M = 4.46, SD = 1.27). Women who became physically inactive during the pandemic had fewer negative affective experiences than women who were inactive before the pandemic (F(3,293)=3.118, p=0.026). Mental health symptoms were reported less frequently in physically active than inactive students. Conclusions: Students who were physically active before and during the pandemic showed better indicators of subjective well-being and mental health than those who were physically inactive or became physically inactive during the pandemic. Physical activity should be promoted in higher education, due to its potential protective effect in managing psychological consequences during a pandemic crisis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this manuscript, we consider a compartmental model to describe the dynamics of propagation of an infectious disease in a human population. The population considers the presence of susceptible, exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic infected, quarantined, recovered and vaccinated individuals. In turn, the mathematical model considers various mechanisms of interaction between the sub-populations in addition to population migration. METHODS: The steady-state solutions for the disease-free and endemic scenarios are calculated, and the local stability of the equilibium solutions is determined using linear analysis, Descartes' rule of signs and the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. We demonstrate rigorously the existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions for the mathematical model, and we prove that the system has no periodic solutions using Dulac's criterion. To solve this system, a nonstandard finite-difference method is proposed. RESULTS: As the main results, we show that the computer method presented in this work is uniquely solvable, and that it preserves the non-negativity of initial approximations. Moreover, the steady-state solutions of the continuous model are also constant solutions of the numerical scheme, and the stability properties of those solutions are likewise preserved in the discrete scenario. Furthermore, we establish the consistency of the scheme and, using a discrete form of Gronwall's inequality, we prove theoretically the stability and the convergence properties of the scheme. For convenience, a Matlab program of our method is provided in the appendix. CONCLUSIONS: The computer method presented in this work is a nonstandard scheme with multiple dynamical and numerical properties. Most of those properties are thoroughly confirmed using computer simulations. Its easy implementation make this numerical approach a useful tool in the investigation on the propagation of infectious diseases. From the theoretical point of view, the present work is one of the few papers in which a nonstandard scheme is fully and rigorously analyzed not only for the dynamical properties, but also for consistently, stability and convergence.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The study aimed to determine nursing educators' and students' perspectives concerning the shift of teaching methodologies to online learning platform in nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study investigated nursing educators' and students' perspectives on online learning. Non-probability convenience sampling technique was used to recruit 120 educators and 350 students, who answered the Test of e-Learning Related Attitudes scale. The data collection was conducted from November to December 2020 in five selected colleges and universities in Saudi Arabia. Results: The findings of the study revealed that the overall mean score of the nursing educators' perspectives on online learning based on the 4 dimensions were 4.18 with a SD of 0.57 and an overall mean score of 4.22 with a SD of 0.61 for the students. Furthermore, the perspectives of both participant groups on challenges and benefits dimensions shows that there was significant difference as supported by a p-value of <0.001 and 0.046. However, it shows in the attitude and interest dimensions that there was no significant difference as supported by a p-value of 0.313 and 0.088, respectively. Conclusion: Nursing educators and students shows an agreement on their perspectives on online learning in terms of attitude and interest dimensions. However, they show their disagreement in terms of challenges and benefits dimensions. Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 pandemic situation could persist for several years. But modern technologies can partially solve current problems in nursing education.

ABSTRACT

The different frames used in the COVID-19 coverage in Ecuador by the national and international press were analyzed through their Twitter accounts. This allowed the examination of which aspects of the pandemic were given greater prominence by each newspaper. The study was based on five generic frames, between 17 March and 16 April 2020. The exploration of these frames was carried out by means of an intersubjective content analysis, using four previously trained encoders. The dominant frames for COVID-19 in Ecuador varied according to the media group studied. 1) The concept of heterogeneity was confirmed within framing theory, according to which a single reality, understood as a textual and visual construct, is addressed in multiple ways by the selection of certain aspects that are given greater emphasis or priority;2) international newspapers and, to a lesser extent, the national press showed their propensity to "internalize" the dynamic of sensationalism;and 3) there are discrepancies in the interests of the readerships with respect to the dominant frames in the media. © 2021, IGI Global.

ABSTRACT

Background. COVID-19 has emerged as a global public health emergency and has been the main cause of intensive care admission during the pandemic. COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) has been reported in case series of critically ill patients. However, the criteria for CAPA diagnosis has been inconsistent among most of the reports. Mexico has been widely affected by SARS-CoV-2. We present a series of CAPA cases at a teaching hospital in Mexico City. Methods. We performed a retrospective analysis of COVID-19 patients admitted to the ABC Medical Center from May 1st, 2020, to May 1st, 2021. Including only those with critical COVID-19 who required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). Patients with a diagnosis of CAPA were analyzed. We followed the 2020 ECMM/ISHAM consensus criteria for CAPA diagnosis. Aspergillus antigen testing in tracheal aspirate and serum was done with Aspergillus-specific galactomannoprotein (GP) ELISA (Euroimmun Medizinische Labordiagnostika). Results. Among the 230 admitted patients who required IMV, we identified 49 (21.3%) cases of CAPA, 46 probable CAPA and 3 proven CAPA. Nineteen (38%) of those died in the hospital. The mean age was 64.5 ± 12.6 years and 11 were female. Proven CAPA was diagnosed with culture in three cases (one A. niger, one A. terreus and one A. fumigatus). Probable CAPA was diagnosed by a positive serum GP in 27 (55.1%) patients and by a positive bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) GP in 29 (59.2%) cases. Seven patients had both serum and BAL positive GP. Forty-six (93.9%) patients received corticosteroids, and 22 (49.9%) were treated with tocilizumab before CAPA diagnosis. All but one received isavuconazole as CAPA treatment. We detected 35 (71.4%) patients who had a bacterial co-infection. Eighteen of those died (51.4%) compared to only one dead in the subgroup without coinfections (7.1%). The mean time from hospital admission to CAPA diagnosis was 6.2 days (SD 7.1) among those who survived compared to 13.2 (SD 6.3) days in those who died p< 0.01. Conclusion. CAPA had a lower prevalence than previously reported in other series. However, it appears to be linked to high mortality when it occurs with other bacterial coinfections and when it is diagnosed late from admission.

ABSTRACT

Quick escalation of the Coronavirus crisis from epidemic to pandemic was unprecedented. A relatively longer asymptomatic period is a key feature of COVID-19 in rapid expansion. This paper suggests a search strategy inspired by the pandemic model of airborne disease transmission. The algorithm is based on straightforward principles globally experienced through the COVID-19 pandemic. Asymptomatic period, social distance, and reproduction numbers are fundaments of the Pandemic Search Algorithm (PSA). The performance assessment results compared to the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Population Swarm optimization (PSO) indicate that PSA is a cost-effective method to establish a compromise between convergence rate and processing time. It can be privileged in computational problems exploring large feasible spaces due to lighter calculations, simpler structures, easier implementation, and tuning. © 2021 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the health care workers derived, among other factors, due to the lack of adequate personal protection equipment, especially face masks and respirators. The forms of transmission are reviewed, taking into consideration that the main route of infections is through aerosols, microparticles smaller than 60-100 microns that are exhaled during aerosol generating procedures (AGP) or even through coughing, sneezing or speaking;and that these forms of transmission are capable of remaining floating for prolonged periods of time in closed spaces. Although the N95 are indicated for the care of patients diagnosed or suspected of COVID-19 because they offer greater protection against aerosols, they are not always available due to their scarcity derived from their high consumption worldwide. In this review the most appropriate alternatives for the shortage crisis are analyzed, trying to prioritize those who have access to materials with filtering efficiency and face sealing to avoid leaks. The appearance of new and more contagious varieties of the virus should obligate all health care workers to always use respirators or medical face masks with greater efficiency within the hospital environment and not only during aerosol generating procedures.

ABSTRACT

The following conversation took place on 20 September 2020, during a virtual encounter jointly organised by Princeton University's Latin American Studies Programme, and the journal Cuadernos de Literatura, from the Pont!ficia Universidad Javeriana, Bogota. "Thinking in the Present" offered a critical opportunity to confront the interpretative volatility and paralysis of criticism of the current moment, the failure of liberal democracy, the deepening of inequality based on intersectionality, and the geopolitics of the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus has disorganised and exposed the intrinsic failure of the algorithms set in the past few decades to predict our movements, to anticipate, and therefore to control, life on the planet, our behavioural patterns and wishes: from how we shop to how we vote. The interpretative failure vis-a-vis the virus's global behaviour - its universalisation in other words, that attempts an interpretation that could apply from New Zealand to Colombia, from Honduras to Singapore - summons forth two thinkers who have worked around the notion of uncertainty, thinkers who could be defined with a key word: suspicion. The photograph featured on the event poster (Figure 1) is by Lotty Rosenfeld, who had recently passed away in Santiago de Chile. The encounter also took place in memoriam of this unforgettable artist, who taught us how to cross the sign. Her crosses bear witness to an indelible act: Lotty Rosenfeld (1943-2020).

ABSTRACT

The pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes COVID-19, has deeply affected health systems and has had a significant impact on families, communities and nations. A comprehensive response strategy requires in addition to epidemiological, scientific and technical considerations, for human suffering associated with disease, vulnerability and death not to be forgotten. Palliative care for people with suspicion or diagnosis of COVID-19 with serious evolution and their families should also be a key pad of organized actions that helps alleviate suffering and improve quality of life by controlling symptoms, addressing psychological, social and spiritual needs, support for advanced care and its goals, end-of-life care, as well as support in complex decision-making and ethical problems, among others. Recommendations are provided for offering palliative care in the COVID-19 pandemic context.

ABSTRACT

Building on the first of its kind review of the global CLT industry published in 2017, this paper aims to provide insight into the global CLT industry. Based on two global CLT industry surveys, 46 plant tours, and supplemented with information obtained from other sources, we observed an increasing production trend of a complimentary cross-laminated panel products that use nails, wooden dowels and other alternative panel integration systems. In most countries outside the Alpine Region, the growth of the CLT industry has been encouraged by the governments motivated by the desire to find a stable, economically viable outlet for substantial volumes of domestic lumber of lesser quality. At the beginning of 2020, we estimated that, considering the number of high-capacity plants ready to go in line or reach full capacity in 2020, the global annual output might reach 2.0-2.5 million m3 by the end of the year. However, this number does not reflect the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, something we will investigate in a third survey. © WCTE 2021. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. The stress coping strategies people rely on impact their psychological well-being and may be related to the risk of developing psychopathology in the short-and long-term after an unfortunate event. Objective. To define the main stress coping strategies in our region as a first step in assessing the risk of developing psychopathology derived from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Method. This is an observational, cross-sectional, analytical study that includes 396 participants over 18 years of age residents of the state of Nuevo Leon. Using an online form, the participants were asked to complete the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CAE). Results. In general, after two months of mitigation measures in Mexico, positive reappraisal was the stress coping strategy with the highest score in the population studied. We found higher scores on negative auto-focused and overt emotional expression on the comparation between sociodemographic subgroups. Discussion and conclusion. The present study shows that, in our community, positive reappraisal was the stress coping strategy with the highest score. Positive reappraisal is an active form of coping associated with greater psychological well-being and fewer risk of developing psychopathology in the short and long term. Based on this, our hypothesis is that the predominant use of this strategy could translate into a higher psychological well-being during and after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the studied sample.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic transformed education from face-to-face to virtual. This accelerated the creation of new learning environments based on the everyday use of mobile devices, presenting new challenges for education. Emerging technologies today drive mobile learning or m-learning. This research focuses on the development of a mobile application that seeks to strengthen the mathematical abilities of whole number empowerment in high school students in a blended mode. The application includes four missions that make up an interactive game, in which the player has three lives and accumulates points. Mate-potencia Olympics faces two players, who must meet the challenges of each mission, the winners go to a second round, until they have the winner. Students learn the process of calculating square powers, identifying each of its elements, allowing dynamic, ubiquitous and flexible learning. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Background: Around 15% of adult GIST are wild type for KIT/PDGFRA mutations (KPWT), usually have SDH deficiencies, and are resistant to imatinib (IM). The underlying mechanisms include overexpression of HIF1α in SDH deficient-GIST, high IGFR signaling through MAPK, BRAF mutation or STAT3 activation. Regorafenib (RE), targeting these pathways, could be more active as upfront therapy in KPWT GIST. Methods: Patients (pts) >18, with advanced non pretreated KPWT GIST were eligible after central confirmation by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Eligible pts received RE at 160mg/d for 21/28d cycles. Primary end-point was disease control rate (DCR) at 12 weeks (RECIST 1.1 ) by central radiological assessment (CRA). Secondary objectives were PFS, OS, ORR (RECIST,Choi), safety and QoL. An amendment allowed previous IM (adjuvant). Statistical assumptions [H0 73% and H1 90% (α 0.1 and β 0.2)], defined a sample size of 20 pts. Results: From May 2016 to October 2020, 30pts with KPWT GIST (by Sanger) underwent central molecular screening. Among the 15 non-eligible pts, 8 harbored KIT exon 11 mutations, 3 exon 9 and 3 PDGFRA exon 18 by NGS. The remaining 16 (53.3%) molecularly eligible pts were enrolled and started RE except one pt due to COVID-19 pandemic. The trial was prematurely closed due to low recruitment, especially after COVID outbreak. Demographics and treatment details in the table. Based on CRA, 12w-DCR was 86.7%. With a median (m) FU of 26 (5-44) months (mo), 10/15 pts progressed, with a mPFS of 10.8 mo (95% CI 6.9-14.8). 6 mo, 9 mo and 12 mo PFS rates were 65%, 48% and 29% respectively. 2 pts were PD-free at 25 and 43 mo from start of RE. 6/15 pts died, with a mOS of 33.5 mo (95% CI NR). [Formula presented] Conclusions: The study results approach the prespecified activity threshold. The low recruitment rate could have affected this attainment. Other analysis of secondary endpoints are ongoing. The high percentage of overlooked mutant GIST by Sanger raises the need of NGS in presumed KPWT GIST. Clinical trial identification: NCT02638766.
